We've made it to Taiwan!!!

Hello all!

I want to start out by thanking everyone that keeps asking us if we are going to update our blog. Really! My (Dayla's) best intentions have been interrupted by the last um . . . 15 months of our life. It has been really insane, but we are in Taipei, Taiwan for the next 2-3 months while we work on paperwork for our latest additions to Team Thomson. Since my last blog entry in March, we have another announcement to make.

Introducing Delan Stewart Thomson. He was born on March 21, 2008, in Tainan, Taiwan. He is our surprise adoption, and really not so different than a surprise pregnancy. And . . . we could not be more thrilled. It won't be long before we have three little monkeys jumping on the bed!

So, to back up in the story long enough to give you a better idea of how we came to be in Taipei, it all started 2 years ago, when we came to Taiwan to pick Camden up . . .

We both fell in love with the island! The people, the culture, the food, the hospitality, the food, the land, the food, the fruit, the food. Okay, well, I love the food & Sean is a really, really good sport! When we were here last, we made some really amazing friendships & honestly, we weren't ready to get back on the plane to go back to the US.

It was then that we began making plans & changes to our life, so that we could be mobile enough to make a long trip. We didn't know when, how or for how long, we just have longed for Taiwan ever since we left.

A lot has happened in those last 24 months, but I will save that for another blog entry. The process of getting back to Taiwan has taken quite a bit of effort, to say the least. But we are really glad we are here & even though I am eating the food, it is still surreal that we have returned.

The first week we arrived was spent looking at apartments & securing one. My cousin, Erin Chen & her hubby, Jacky & their 3 yr. old daughter Pinky, hosted us while we were searching for an apartment. We were able to find one that we really like in the same apartment complex as Jacky & Erin. We couldn't be more thrilled! It is in the Xindian area south of Taipei city. Right on the Xindian River. We are not able to move into our apartment until this coming Saturday & have been staying in a hostel until the apartment is ready.

When we left the States, there were a couple more steps for Quin's adoption to be complete. Since we have arrived, the adoption contract has arrived, and we are waiting on the final decree, which usually is about a week behind the contract. Until that precious piece of paper arrives, we are getting to visit Quin twice a week. He and Camden are getting along great! They have played and played on the slide & on the big foam geometric shapes in the play room where we are doing the visits. They had their first squabble last Tuesday. Quin was on little motorcycle & Camden wanted it bad! I am confident that this will be the first of many times where one has something the other wants & it causes some sibling rivalry, esp. if it involves a motorcycle!

Quin is just simply as sweet in real life, as in his pictures. He is all boy & is a very happy little kiddo. We're very anxious to have him home with us, and start our life with him!

We want to have Quin home for at least a week or so before we bring Declan home. Quin is going to need some time to get adjusted to living with us & our new home. So, I am hoping that it won't be long before all my ducklings are home in their nest!

In the mean time, we had made arrangements for a friend of ours to come and help us with the boys and to set up our new home. We are having a good time with her here & she has been an amazing blessing in helping with Camden.

I am hoping that I will be able to write more once we get into our place. And I promise, pictures are coming!

Camden's drama

Well, well, well . . . so, we thought we would be in Taiwan by now, but as adoptions go, we are still here in the States.

Camden's given us quite a bit of drama in the past couple of months. To recap . . .

* 1 wk before leaving Pagosa, Camden dislocated his elbow & pinched a nerve in his shoulder, causing all of his muscles in his arm, shoulder & neck on his left side to go limp. Emergency trip to Dr. Brown & a lesson on re-locating an almost 2 yr old's elbow back into socket.

* 15 hours after arriving in Oklahoma, Camden swallowed a button/hearing aid battery. ***note to all momma's reading this . . . if your child swallows a button battery, DO NOT use ipekak syrup. so, emergency trip to the med. clinic & 4 x-rays later, we located where the battery was in his digestive system. Thankfully, in 1 1/2 hrs., it had passed through his esophogus & stomach & had passed into his small intestine - still not out of the woods, but did not require emergency surgery. Our learning curve on this adventure taught us that there really is an 800 # for swallowing button batteries - and that they are amazing!

* 3 days later, Camden dislocated his elbow - again, but it was the weekend, and holiday. Our friends that we were staying with in Oklahoma, have friend's whose daughter routinely disclocated her elbow for the first 6 years of their life, on the average of once a month. We are so thankful for the people that who have been brought to mind in these situations, that are able to coach us through relocating joints! So on speaker phone and with four adults standing over him, this kind father talked us through how to put Camden's elbow back in socket. Nothing like that set of nerves. Never. Want. To. Repeat. That!

* We traveled from Oklahoma City to Joplin to visit friends from my beloved season in Joplin. We had only been in town long enough to unpack & sleep a good nights sleep, before Camden came down with chicken pox. Really? So as to not infect all of my friends and their young children. I CALLED all of my friends and spent time with them on the PHONE while I was in town. I know we made the right decision, and that Camden needed extra rest and TLC, but man, I've waited 6 years for this visit! Argh!

It's been a long, long 8 months

April 26, 2008

I have so looked forward to actually having the time to start working on our blog. Life has slowed down enough that I have been able to take several, several deep breaths, and feel mostly sane again.

The last 8 months have been pretty intense.

* We (Sean, really) accepted a new client in San Antonio, TX - a new hotel/condo complex on a new section of the Riverwalk. It has been such a financial blessing to have God's provision through this last winter while things in Pagosa were at a housing development standstill.

* We started our "due dilligence" on the paperwork for our second adoption & looking under every rock in Taiwan to find the next little one that God had for our family.

* The first week of December, all three of us got sick. Camden had a fever of 104.6 for 5 days. Sean's pnemonia made a comeback & I had the sniffles. It was pretty intense, & then, just as Camden's fever was breaking & he was starting to feel better, my sniffles turned into a head cold. From the headcold, it went to a sinus infection, to an ear infection, to an inner ear infection & vertigo.

I honestly didn't know how completely dibilitating vertigo could be. I have a whole new compassion for those that suffer with vertigo, esp. long term.

The same day that everything in my world started spinning, I lost my hearing in my right ear. It was an incredibly miserable time!

Fast forward from December to the middle of February. I found a physical therapist that was able to cure my vertigo almost immediatley. I had been on the strongest motion sickness meds available for 2 1/2 mo. Later, I found that a person is only supposed to use that med for 2-3 weeks.

Everyone, including myself, assumed that once the vertigo vanished, my hearing would return. But it didn't. My audiologist is confident that my severe hearing loss is permenant.

New Addition

We have a new addition to our little crew, and . . . After looking in a lot of cabbage patches, we found our little boy. Our journey has to this little guy has been very different than the first round with Camden. We have been doing a lot of homework & legwork to get to our little boy, and have personal contacts who have generously offered to help with his paperwork, so three will become four.Kenjiro Quin Thomson was born near Taipei, Taiwan on January 25, 2007. Kenjiro (Japanese) meaning, "second son who sees with insight" and Quin (Scottish) meaning, "wise." Can you see it in his eyes? Soon baby boy, I can't wait to be holding you!!!
His Guh-gu (big brother), Camden Taylor is 9 months older than his Dee-dee (little bro). We're not sure how much Camden understands, but he wakes up in the morning, points to the computer & says, Dee-dee!, Dee-dee! When we open the picture of Quin's sweet little face, Camden plays peek-a-boo with him. He has definitely caught Momma & Babba's excitement - even if he doesn't understand how much his world is about to change! So, with that being said, we can officially start making plans to move to Taipei in the next couple of weeks. We have made a final decision about the family that will foster our little guy - IT'S US!!!! We are going to Taiwan to foster our babe until the paperwork is finalized in Taiwan. We are waiting on the I-171h to arrive, and the homestudy to come back in Chinese. The day that both of those documents are in my hot little hand, we will buy our tickets, and start this leg of the exciting new journey within the week. We (of course) are HOPING that the paperwork arrives tomorrow. It's definitely a probability that one of the two documents will arrive this week - but as you all know, adoption doesn't usually go according to the flow chart. So, I keep reminding my heart that it may be a couple of months before I hold my new son. (It hasn't really helped, though.)
My Toes are WIGGLING!!!!

Love, Dayla (for Sean, Camden & Quin, too!)
